The scene was chaotic as hundreds thronged a primary school in Hanoi, bringing down its front iron gate. You may think this is a life and death issue but in fact the ‘victims’ are parents jostling to buy application documents so that their 6-year-old kids could have a shot at attending this quality place.
They had slept in front of the gate or queued throughout the night until Saturday morning when the near stampede occurred in front of the Thuc Nghiem School on Lieu Giai Street in Ba Dinh District.
They wanted to obtain some academic documents for their children to apply for the first-grade starting September.
It rained heavily the night before.
It is no surprise the school is quite famous, having trained many famed scientists of the nation, including mathematician Ngo Bao Chau — the first Vietnamese to receive the Fields Medal that is considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics.
The school planned to sell 200 application documents to enroll 120 pupils.

From 21:00 last night, many parents queued in front of the entrance gate of the school in hope of winning early spots the following morning. They wore rain coat and used umbrellas as it began raining at 22:30
Some parents said they wanted their children to study at the school because of cheap tuition and good teaching quality

School threatened to stop selling the documents, making the audacious parents return to their queue
Parents displayed regret and said they would return in the next sale round
