Ancient wells, tangible heritage in Hoi An
According to The Hoi An Center of Monument Conservation and Management , there are 80 ancient wells remaining in Hoi An (Quang Nam) ,distributed mainly in the north of the De Vong river in 5 and 6 hamlet Cam Thanh commune; street 4 , Thanh Ha ward and in the Old Quarter Area.
The ancient wells in Hoi An have three basic designs with circle (63%), square (17.3%), circular top and square bottom (16%) and a few wells have various styles in shape,. Although there are many different styles but the ancient wells have feature in common is that a square wooden frame put under brick edge to prevent subsidence, landslides.
Its specific characteristics is pure , fresh and not out of water in the severe sunny days . In order to assure quality of Cao Lau dish ( local – style noodle) people take water from Hoi An ancient wells to cook.
